Donna Bunce is the founder of Compassionate Heart Ministries, an organization that currently provides 120 teenagers and young adults with developmental disabilities a social network of friends and role models, engaging them in activities twice a week. The program, based in the Holland/Zeeland, Mich. area, draws young people from surrounding communities and continues to grow.

Five-year-old Connor Geelhoed went door-to-door selling more than 1,000 candy bars to raise money to purchase Christmas gifts and a Christmas dinner for two families in Jenison, Mich.

Riley Homer and Emma and Braeanna Mull are cousins and friends. The girls sew and sell fabric gift bags, donating the profits to God's Kitchen, a part of Catholic Charities of West Michigan that helps "feed the hungry with dignity and respect." Check them out at Riley's Gift Bags on Facebook.

With the help of 20 volunteers, Rick Kasten cooks Sunday morning breakfast to cover the one day when no other venues offer a free or reduced meal to those in need. What started in a park has moved indoors and now feeds about 300 people weekly in Grand Rapids and Holland, Mich.

Jan Lampman, executive director of the ARC of Midland, hosted the Midland, Mich., Lose the Training Wheels bike camp. The camp helps kids with developmental disabilities learn to ride two-wheel bikes at annual weeklong summer camps across the country.

Krista Mason and her family were inspired by their son, Benjamin, who has autism, to create a community in rural Park Township, Mich., for children with developmental differences. Benjamin's Hope is a place where children with developmental differences can come to live, work, even stay for a day so that their families can rest assured they're being well-cared-for and enjoying time with friends.

Judie Pratt and her husband, Larry, founded The Lemonade Stand to help provide comfort, help and shelter to people with mental illnesses in Muskegon, Mich. The Lemonade Stand provides peer-led counseling in a warm, safe place where friends help friends.

Gladys Walker has volunteered at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility nursing home in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., for a quarter of a century. She started working with the organization while her sister was a resident. Although her sister has passed away, Gladys continues to volunteer by cooking, sewing and helping with outings. Every year, Gladys sews a quilt to be auctioned off at the annual picnic as a fundraiser for the nursing home.
